A man is charged with taking tens of thousands of dollars in jewelry from a safe in

LaPorte.

26-year old Joshua Tawney made his initial appearance yesterday in LaPorte Circuit Court.

According to police......Tawney opened the safe at the home of his girlfriend's parents

on Jongkind Park Dr.

Police say more than $60,000 in gold and diamond jewelry were taken along with pieces of

sterling silver.

$500 in cash and prescription pills also were grabbed.

Police say Tawney was quickly identified as a suspect....

Last week.....a month long search ended at a home on Oberreich St....where was

taken into custody.

He could face an up to two and a half year sentence on a theft charge.

According to police......it appears Tawney was involved in the sale and use of illegal drugs
