answers sought for assessed value drop

The city of LaPorte is wondering why its assessed valuation keeps going down.

During a city council workshop last evening........the issue was discussed but nobody

seems to know why.

City councilman Roger Galloway says the assessed valuation is down 17 million dollars.

With the local manufacturing economy growing recently......and improvements downtown.....

he says a drop in assessed value doesn't add up.....

Galloway says the drop in assessed value means revenue losses for the city.

He says the city is also losing about 600 thousand dollars next year because of state

tax caps and circuit breakers that went into effect a few years ago....

Galloway says the revenue declines will be made up by cuts in areas like the park department....
