There was not the usual flyover by military jets to kick off the start of the

LaPorte fourth of July parade.

But, a single engine aircraft piloted by a U.S Coast Guard officer did make several passes

over the city before the 10 a.m. parade on Lincolnway got underway.

Lt. Commander Scott Freshour, a native of Elkhart, flew in from North Carolina on what's called an Experimental Van's RV-8.

LaPorte again was the state's capital for a day as proclaimed by the governor every July 4th since 1942, said mayor Mark Krentz.

''We've had that proclamation each and every year since,'' Krentz said.

The city's fireworks show at the LaPorte County fairgrounds was held July 3rd for the first time and drew about twice the amount of people as last year,'' said Brad Rauschenbach, chairman of the parade sponsored annually by the LaPorte Jaycees.

The fireworks show in LaPorte had suffered from declining attendance since Michigan City a few years ago moved its fireworks show at the lakefront normally the weekend after Independence Day to July 4th.
