– A man allegedly fled Michigan City Police at more than 100 miles per hour while alcohol impaired before crashing his sports car.

Joseph Hiben, 31, of South Bend is charged in LaPorte Superior Court 4 with level 6 felony resisting law enforcement along with reckless driving and operating while intoxicated, both misdemeanors.

According to the police report, a security officer at Blue Chip Casino suspecting Hiben was intoxicated stopped his car.

Hiben soon drove off at a high rate of speed in a 1998 Porsche through the casino parking lot nearly striking a patrol officer in an unmarked police vehicle heading over to assist security, according to the report.

Sgt. Jason Holaway despite reaching 100 miles per hour in the pursuit eastbound on U.S 12 kept losing ground on the sports car.

According to police, the officer discontinued the chase but then saw a cloud of dust and the Porsche with one of its front tires on the Amtrak tracks parallel to the four lane highway near Karwick Road.

Hiben and a female passenger were holding their hands up in the air when the officer on foot approached the car.

An open bottle of alcohol was recovered from the vehicle, police said.

Hiben had an alleged blood alcohol level of .167-percent.

He was released from the LaPorte County Jail the next day after posting $950 cash bond.
