A Westville area man drowned when the small boat he was fishing in at a private pond apparently capsized.

Glenn Zeman, 61, was pronounced dead at 7177 W. Joliet Rd. just east of Westville Saturday afternoon by LaPorte County Coroner Bob Cutler.

Cutler said Zeman was fishing with his two grandsons who were on shore with their poles.

The children left to get something and when they returned the boat was upside down in the water, he said.

''They didn't see him at first and then they noticed he was face down in the water,'' Cutler said.

Cutler said the boys alerted their parents and family waded about 50 yards out into the water then pulled him to shore.

He was fishing in a private pond on property owned by a close friend, Rosemary Shaw.

Shaw said Zeman shouldn't have been in the flat bottom boat due to a bad back.

''But when a guy loves fishing that's what he going to do,'' she said.

Cutler said Zeman was fully clothing and had on boots.

Zeman did not have on a life jacket and there were no floatation devices in the watercraft, he said.

He said Zeman also had COPD which could have been factor in any attempt by him to make it back to shore.

Cutler said Zeman often fished at the private pond and had taken his grandsons with him previously.
