Steve Armstrong choked back tears discussing what it was like going from one church to another on Good Friday carrying a cross.

''It's touching. Very touching,'' said Armstrong.

He was among 50 or so people taking part in LaPorte's annual Crosswalk in the downtown area.

Brief sermons about the love and sacrifice of Jesus were delivered at each of the seven participating churches before the next volunteer carrying the cross led the foot procession to the next house of worship.

It was the second time Armstrong took part in the event and first time he picked up the cross.

The LaPorte man said he felt moved to do it after overcome by emotion from the singing of the classic hymn, ''The Old Rugged Cross,'' where the spiritual event started at Christ Church at 802 Indiana Ave.

''I think it offers time for quiet reflection so that we can find our own place on the way to the cross,'' said Michelle Walker also of LaPorte.

The message from Rev. Kit Billings at LaPorte New Church Swedenborgian at 812 Indiana Ave. was about the spiritual battle Jesus from his death on the cross gained for humanity.

Billing said the crucifixion broke the chains of condemnation brought by sin and gave us freedom to ''love God and have faith in God and to care for each other.''

His challenge was to remember that sacrifice for help in showing others mercy, love and forgiveness as Jesus did even on the cross.

''Forgiveness reconciles us to the father and when we have peace with God, we have salvation,'' said Kevin Galloway, pastor at Christ Church.

The crosswalk is sponsored by the LaPorte County Ministerial Association.

Mike Sutton, the LCMA president, said developing a sense of humility toward others and togetherness among the congregations are other goals of the event.

'We hope this continues to build bonds of unity within the local churches in the community,'' Sutton said.
