strong maple syrup season

It's been a good year....so far....for making maple syrup.

Tree tappers in the area report about 30 percent more sap in the

buckets this year.

Nights below freezing and days above freezing......gets the sap

pumping.....

And there's been more of that so far this season....

Leslie Witkowski is with Bendix Woods County Park outside

New Carlisle.

She says they're already halfway to the record for maple syrup production

at Bendix Woods.....in just two short weeks.

Mother nature will decide if that record gets eclipsed.

We also spoke with Ervin Heatwole.....

He has taps in 900 maple trees.....in the Nappanee area.

He's already equaled last year's total...

Maple syrup is made by boiling down the sap........

It takes about 50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup.
