Plans to upgrade the water and sewer system in LaPorte were discussed

at last night's city council meeting.

The projected cost for upgrading just the waste water system is 6.3 million

The upgrades include a treatment plant powered by solar energy and new

high tech meters.

Officials say a half million dollars a year in energy savings is projected.

And those savings will be used to pay for the work.

That's according to Eric Walsh, a financial consultant with Indianapolis based Umbaugh & Associates.

A bond issue to finance the project is expected to be voted on by the city council

In March.

The work is slated to begin this year.
