A four-year prison sentence was given to a LaPorte man for stabbing the ex-husband of a woman he also divorced.

Ronald Romano, III, 46, was sentenced Friday in LaPorte Circuit Court on level 5 felony battery and Class A misdemeanor battery.

According to court documents, Jason Haywood in November of 2016 went to Romano's home in the 400 block of L St. to get a woman both once had been married to out of the residence.

Romano told him to leave but Haywood refused to go unless the woman came with him.

During an altercation at the front door, Romano stabbed and punched Haywood who nearly lost a finger and received 18 stitches to close a cut on his nose, according to court documents.

The investigation also revealed Romano prior to the stabbing threatened Haywood with a rifle or shotgun.

Haywood grabbed the barrel and pointed it at Romano's brother to discourage Romano from possibly pulling the trigger, police said.

According to court documents, Haywood after a falling out with his current wife was staying with his former in-laws in Kingsford Heights when his ex-wife called sounding scared.

That's when he rushed over to Romano's house to get her out of what he described as an abusive relationship, police said.

According to police, Romano explained he was twice divorced from the woman and they were not married when Haywood stormed over.

Romano faced a one to six-year sentence on the felony count.

Judge Tom Alevizos cited Romano's mostly misdemeanor criminal history that includes past battery convictions for issuing a sentence at the upper end of the scale.
