Charges were filed Thursday in connection with one in a string of smash and grab burglaries at convenience stores in Indiana and Michigan. Erodney Coffey, 41, of Gary is expected to be arraigned Friday in LaPorte Circuit Court on burglary and attempted burglary, each level 5 felonies. It’s alleged he stole 35 cartons of cigarettes from Family Express at Pinola late Tuesday after shattering a window then a half hour later broke the glass at A & A Petroleum in Westville and fleeing without going inside. He was later stopped in Wanatah in a gold Pontiac G6, the model described at some of the burglaries, including ones at Knoll Brothers in New Buffalo and Value Mart near Stevensville, police said. LaPorte County Police chief deputy Ron Heeg said investigators from Berrien and Porter counties teamed up with detectives here to determine if Coffey had anything to do with the other break-ins and if anyone else was involved. ‘’We are trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together,’’ Heeg said. At least nine smash and grab burglaries believed connected occurred within the past month.
