overdose deaths up 21-percent

People dying from a drug overdose in the U.S. has increased 21 percent.

Drug deaths topped 63 thousand in 2016, according to federal statistics.

Authorities say close to 30 percent of the deaths were from the painkiller fentanyl.

The number of overdoses in 2015 and 2016 were high enough to drive down 

the average life expectancy here in the U.S.
