Sadly, a more than six hour effort by police Wednesday to negotiate with a man ended with

him taking his life.

He was found dead in the 900 block of Indiana after a gunshot rang out from inside

a home.

Negotiators were at the 911 center talking to the man on the phone the entire time.

The experience for a negotiator can be draining......and certainly more emotional if the

outcome is not successful.

LaPorte County Police Capt. Mike Kellems was a negotiator for 20 years.

He says more often that not....the outcomes are successful.

Kellems says the most important thing is listening....

Gaining their trust and offering hope are other keys.....but there are no guarantees....

During a negotiation....Kellems says there are all sorts of emotions even laughter as

the personal aspect of things begin developing.

So....if the outcome isn't what they wanted........there are feelings like sorrow they

have to deal with....

Kellems says there is no single playbook for negotiators to follow because of people

being different with various experiences that led up to a situation.
