– People were advised to avoid an area of LaPorte blocked to motor vehicle traffic Wednesday afternoon.

LaPorte Police Sgt. Bill Degnegaard said negotiators with the sheriff's office are outside a home occupied by a single individual in the 900 block of Indiana Ave.

The man possibly has a gun and threatened to harm himself, police said.

''We're trying to speak to him and do it in the safest way possible,'' said Degnegaard.

Since about 2 p.m., Indiana Ave. was closed from Lincolnway to Osborn St. and so were several streets leading to and from that area.

Traffic back-ups were created on adjacent main arteries like Monroe St. and Michigan Ave. from drivers having to detour around the area.

The front entrance to the main branch of the LaPorte County Public Library was also closed as a precaution but people were allowed to use the side entrance along Maple Ave.
