Santa Claus appears to have a new home for taking Christmas wishes from children in LaPorte.

The new 618 Plaza seemed to be a hit Saturday as the new gathering place before and after the annual Santa Parade down Lincolnway.

Free cider, hot chocolate, traditional holiday music and a decorated tree were no different than in previous years..

The festivities being in the heart of downtown for the first time, though, seemed to add a buzz to the air.

''Anytime you try something different, you never know. But, judging by the people's reaction today this is exciting so we're going to keep it here from here on out,'' said Thaddeus Cutler, the city's downtown director.

The festivities were relocated from the Greater LaPorte Chamber of Commerce two blocks to the north on Washington St. to take advantage of the plaza's more visible location.

Rebecca Davis of LaPorte relaxed on a bench as her 9-year old daughter, Samiah, and 4-year old son, Daunte, stood in line nearby for hot chocolate and cookies.

''It's nicer over here. The kids can run around and play,'' she said.

Once the parade was over, Santa marched into his chalet at its new location at the plaza to hear from more than 100 children one at a time.

Santa will be in his chalet every Saturday before Christmas from 1 p.m to 3 p.m.

8-year old Alexis Surowiec already excited seemed to perk up even more when Santa while still on his lap handed her two pieces of licorice.

''I love candy,'' she said.

Mayor Mark Krentz after riding in the parade made his way over to the plaza for pictures in front of the tree in a formal top hat and frock coat that he put on just for the occasion.

''It's just a nice spot to stop and Santa has a big line to see him so it's going to be a fun day,'' he said
