LaPorte County Police were investigating the death of a 70-year old man possibly from exposure to the cold after falling down a steep hill while out for a walk with his dog.

According to police, Vernon Ringler after reported missing by a caretaker Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. was found deceased partially in the water of a pond near his home in the 7500 block of E. Tulip Lane.

A knit hat and flash light were found roughly 150 yards from his residence on a steep brush covered slope leading to the pond, said police.

LaPorte County Police Capt. Mike Kellems said the man was wearing dark sunglasses because of recent cataract surgery and could have by accident stepped off the edge and rolled down the 50 to 60 foot long hill into the 47 degree water.

There was no evidence of foul play.

Ringler recently had gotten lost in South Bend and possibly was in the early stages of altzheimer's disease, police said.

The dog was found laying in the thicket and was o.k., Kellems said.
