A woman was taken by ambulance Monday after hit by a motor vehicle crashing into her place of employment in LaPorte.

Rachel Stone, 32, of Michigan City was transported to LaPorte Hospital.

Stone told investigators she had a bump on her head and pain to her mid-section but it was too early to know the extent of her injuries, police said.

Emergency responders about 10 a.m. were called to Personal Finance Company at the Pine Lake Shopping Center close to the U.S 35 overpass.

Carol Combs, 79, of LaPorte said she was pulling up to park in front of the building and must have pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, according to police.

Her 2013 Buick Verano crashed through a window about ten feet high and five feet wide and stopped halfway into the building.

Stone said she was seated at her work station when a short divider wall hit by the vehicle was pushed into her desk hard enough to throw her onto the floor about six feet from where she was seated, according to police.

LaPorte Fire Department Capt. Eric Sabie said the woman prior to being placed on a backboard and into the ambulance was on the floor ''groaning and moaning like she was in a lot of pain.''

Two doors away was Ryan Ochall, manager at General Nutrition Services who rushed over after hearing glass breaking and saw the vehicle partially inside the building and Stone laying down complaining of being hurt.

''It's a scary situation,'' he said.

Customers walking up to Personal Finance Company looked surprised when they came upon the broken pieces of glass strewn on the sidewalk and inside of the business.

LaPorte Police Cpl. Joe Toth said Combs was allowed to go home in her still driveable car.

He said she likely will not be charged.

''It wasn't intentional,'' Toth said.
