Another girl in Michigan City has been hit by a car similar to how a 5-year old child was killed two months ago.

The 8-year old girl was reported by police Friday in stable condition at an outside hospital she was airlifted to.

A 16-year old driver allegedly without a license and his mother riding in the car with him were both arrested.

According to Michigan City Police, the girl before 5 p.m. Thursday was attempting to cross the street near Marsh Elementary School when hit by a 2014 Ford Fusion.

Police did not provide more specifics on how the collision transpired.

The driver was charged with operating a vehicle without ever obtaining a license, a Class C misdemeanor.

His mother, Graciela Chavez-Melendez, was taken into custody for Class A misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allowing her unlicensed son to drive.

She also never had obtained a driver's license.

Delaney Klewer on July 15 was attempting to cross the street on her way back to Water Tower Park to retrieve her shoes when fatally struck by a car.

34-year old Marcus Scully of Trail Creek allegedly never stopped and turned himself in two days later.

With a second child now being struck near a playground, Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek urged motorists to use extreme caution while traveling through school zones or playground areas.

A committee assembled by the mayor after Delaney was killed to look at safety improvements at all of the parks will soon be coming back with some recommendations, Swistek said.
