A man was badly injured when his airborne SUV broke a tree in half along a dangerous stretch of U.S 20 north of LaPorte.

Jeffrey Mullins, 42, of Michigan City was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend following the Tuesday crash just after 10 p.m.

LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service spokesman Buddy Kasinger listed his condition as serious.

According to LaPorte County Police, the eastbound Mullins left the right side of the four lane highway before his 1996 Chevy Blazer hit a tree branch and the lower portion of another tree uprooted and snapped in two.

Kasinger said impact was about six to eight feet off the ground near Wilhelm Rd.

''It was a pretty good sized tree,'' said Kasinger.

Police said Mullins was not able to shed light on why the accident occurred and it was not immediately known if alcohol was a factor.

U.S 20 in both directions was closed for about 45 minutes, Kasinger said.

Eight of the 15 motor vehicles deaths in LaPorte County this year stem from crashes on U.S 20, police said.
