Former LaPorte Slicers baseball coach Ken Schreiber expected greatness and pushed

his players to attain it.

That's according to Tom Dermody....a pitcher and designated

hitter for the Slicers baseball team in the 80's.

Schreiber died Friday afternoon.

He was 83.

Dermody says it's special to have played for Schreiber.....who

got the most out of his teams....

Funeral services for Schreiber are scheduled Thursday at 10 a..m.

at St. John Lutheran Church.

LaPorte baseball coaching legend Ken Schreiber was like a father to some

of his players.....and a huge example for everyone to follow....

Chip Jones played for Schreiber in the early 70's.

Despite being so revered by many....Jones says Schreiber was very approachable

and would talk to anybody....

It's been about 20 years since Schreiber last coached.....but Jones says his death

even now has just as much of an impact on the entire community.,

He was a legend on the baseball field...but he also played a role with

local law enforcement.

Ken Schreiber served on the city's police merit commission for several years.....

That was roughly 25 to 30 years ago..

Jack Arnett is executive director of the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors

Bureau.

He was on the police merit commission with Schreiber for several years and said

qualities Schreiber was known for on the baseball field like leadership

and following rules...are things he brought to the police merit commission...

Schreiber was head coach of the Slicers baseball team for close to 40-years

and brought home seven state championships and winning over 1,000 games.
