Flashing light patrols are being tried in Michigan City to reduce gunfire and other crimes.

Michigan City mayor Ron Meer says the patrols tried for the first time

Friday night in the Eastport section of the city are not on a

regular schedule.

They'll be conducted purely by surprise......and other areas of the city

whenever problems arise.....and at different times....

Meer says the Eastport area was already seeing extra patrols...before

the police vehicles with their lights flashing continuously at night were dispatched...

The idea is to increase police presence and let citizens know the police are there working the neighborhood.

Meer says the six to eight officers working lighted patrols are in addition

to officers already scheduled for the shift.

He says the lighted patrols will last roughly two hours on the days they

hit the streets.
