As many as 100,000 people or more are expected in Michigan City for the 9th annual Great Lakes Grand Prix and all of the festivities leading up to the race along the lakefront.
More than 20 powerboats traveling up to 150 miles per hour will start hitting the water Saturday for test runs from noon to 4 p.m.
According to the schedule of events, race related activities Saturday downtown include the Taste of Michigan City from noon to 10 p.m. and a boat parade and block parade beginning at 6 p.m.
The races Sunday at Washington Park are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The sanctioning body of the race is Superboat International, whose 2017 schedule has competitions in cities like Key West and Clearwater in Florida and Mentor, Ohio.
Last year's event had a close to $10 million economic impact on the area with visitors coming mostly from Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, said Jack Arnett, executive director of the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
''It's become such an iconic event. You got to be excited about that,'' said Arnett.
