A Gary man serving time for two murder convictions was stabbed to death Wednesday at the Indiana State Prison.

A suspect in the case was placed in a restrictive housing unit pending the possible filing of charges.

According to prison officials, Willie Steele was doing some facility work in an area of the prison usually reserved offenders who have violated prison rules.

He was stabbed once in the torso and found at 4:33 a.m. by a correctional officer, said Pam James, spokesman for the prison.

He was pronounced dead about three hours later at Franciscan Health, officials said.

James said Steele was not housed in the area of the prison where he was found and what transpired leading up to the stabbing was still being pieced together.

''He was a facility worker working in another unit,' said James.

The identity of the suspect was not released and charges hinge on the outcome of the ongoing investigation by the LaPorte County Prosecutor's Office, Indiana State Prison and prison investigators.

Steele was serving 65 years for two murder convictions with a consecutive sentence of 15 years for Criminal Confinement from Lake County, Indiana. His earliest possible release date had been November 14, 2049, prison officials stated.

James said the facility work Steele was assigned to perform can include cleaning floors.
