A man could face significant prison time for allegedly beating the owner of a LaPorte County mobile home park with a pipe.
James Lee Hooker, 32, of New Carlisle is charged in LaPorte Circuit Court with level 1 felony attempted murder and level 3 felony battery.
It's alleged Jacob Pasternac, the owner of Springville Trailer Park north of LaPorte, was hit on the head 4 to 5 times by Hooker with a metal pipe on July 4.
During a Tuesday probable cause hearing, the motive was revealed to be $20,000 Hooker accused Pasternac of still owing his parents over the sale of a house trailer last year.
LaPorte County Police detective Jacob Koch said the investigation showed Hooker made arrangements to meet with Pasternac at his trailer park at 1822 W. Springville Rd. claiming interest in a mobile home the victim had for sale.
Koch said both men went inside the dark trailer and while Pasternac with a flashlight was making sure he had the right title to the home Hooker struck the top of his head with a pipe.
More blows to the head followed as Hooker kept yelling ''I'm going to kill you.''
Hooker also told the victim during the assault ''he screwed his parents out of a bunch of money,'' said Koch.
The blows stopped during a struggle and Pasternac after pushed into a glass window forced his way past Hooker blocking the door and ran to a mobile home nearby.
He suffered a mild concussion and at least 5 lacerations to his head that took 32 staples to close, said LaPorte County deputy prosecutor Atley Price.
Price said Pasternac before his release from the hospital was informed about the prospects of plastic surgery.
Koch said police are trying to locate a black duffel bag that Hooker told his sister precisely where to go to dig up.
No light was shed on the bag's contents, but Koch said Hooker pulled a pipe out of the bag he had with him just prior to the attack.
