kingsford heights without water

All of Kingsford Heights has been without water since last night when a broken main caused the municipal holding tank to run dry.

Henry Ruiz, the water department operator for the town of more than 1,000 residents eight miles south of LaPorte, said the main on Evanston Rd. broke Monday but they were not able to shut off the water.

''We tried to turn the water off where it's leaking but we couldn't do it,'' said Ruiz.

Customers despite the main break continued to have service, though, until Tuesday night when the 100,000 reserve tank became empty.

Ruiz said the reserve supply was depleted because a pump that sends fresh water into the holding tank apparently couldn't keep up with the amount of water being lost out of the broken main and the amount being used by customers.

Ruiz said the break in the main was located Wednesday morning allowing crews to begin the repair which he hoped would be completed before the end of the day.

''We're on our way to repair it,'' said Ruiz.

Bottled water was being handed out at town hall.

Police officers, firefighters and other volunteers were also delivering bottled water to residents unable or with difficulty getting out of their homes.

''Town board members are also very active in getting water to the residents as well,'' said Kingsford Heights Town Marshal Rich Oberle.

Ruiz said residents were notified prior to their faucets running dry that service was going to temporarily stop and where to get drinking water until flows were restored.

He said a boil order will be issued for a couple of days once service is restored as a standard safeguard while they're making sure all of the lines open to contamination during a system failure are sterilized.
