The former Lincoln Township Fire Chief at Fish Lake has been given a four-year prison sentence for trying to solicit a 15 year old boy in the cadet program.
Kaufman, 60, was sentenced Friday in LaPorte Circuit Court for Class C felony attempted sexual misconduct with a minor along with attempted possession of child pornography and child solicitation, both Class D felonies.
He was convicted by a jury in March of propositioning the boy, who kept turning down his offers to take part in what Kaufman claimed was a study of the male anatomy he was conducting for a university.
During the hearing, LaPorte County deputy prosecutor Catherine Breitweiser-Hurst said there were at least 18-20 mostly cadets and young men on the department asked to take part in the scheme dating back to 1993.
The study included Kaufman taking measurements of their genitalia and collecting sperm samples.
Some of the people refused to take part despite fears of retribution and offers of money, she said.
"There was intimidation in some cases. Retaliation in other cases,'' said Hurst.
Hurst said none of the other cases were prosecuted because of victims preferring not to come forward and, perhaps, Kaufman's standing in the community being of influence, she said.
