Below is a list of upcoming benefits that have been organized in an effort to help raise money, support and awareness for various causes. Please visit this page frequently for updates and join us as we support members of our community.

SALVATION ARMY IN LA PORTE
The Food Pantry is always in need of non-perishable foods, paper goods, and soaps, shampoos, etc.
You may drop off at the Salvation Army, 3240 Monroe Street, La Porte, between 9 and 4 Monday thorugh Friday.

SALVATION ARMY IN LA PORTE
The "Back Pack" program provides nutritous food for elementary children from Lincoln Elementary in La Porte.  Each Thursday the Salvation Army delivers "Back Packs" full of the following items for the children to enjoy over the weekend.  We are asking the community to consider donating the following food items for these "Back Packs":
Pasta-7 ounce - typical brand is Chef Boyardee - brand not important
Fruit cups or applesauce cups - 4 ounce each
100% Fruit juice container - 4 ounce each (plus or minus)
Soft protein bars - can be cereal with fruit bars
Cereal - self-serve bowl, reduced sugar preferred
Cereal bars with milk - individually packiaged.  1 ounce each (plus or minus)
Soft granola or trail mix bars, preferably low sugar
Crackers, individual packages, about 1-ounce -- such as cheddar cheese, peanut butter or graham.

These items may be donated in any quanity or you may make cash donations for the Back Pack program.
Drop donations off at: Salvation Army of La Porte, 3240 Monroe Street, La Porte, between 9 to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
You may also volunteer to put the Back Packs together.  Call 326-5342

MICHIGAN CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY - LEARNING CENTER
DO YOU LOVE TO READ?  WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE THAT WITH SOMEONE ELSE?  THE LEARNING CENTER IS IN DIRE NEED OF A FEW GOOD PEOPLE!  WE E HAVE STUDENTS ON A WAITING LIST FOR TUTORING ASSISTANCE, ESPECIALLY FOR READING.  IF YOU ARE WILLING TO GIVE JUST A FEW HOURS A WEEK, YOU CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY.  READING IS TRULY FUNDAMENTAL.  PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING IN THE FUN.  SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER AT THE LEARNING CENTER TODAY.  CALL 219/873-3049 OR BETTER YET, STOP BY THE LIBRARY AND SEE CYNDIE OR JESSICA.

YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT THE RONALD MC DONALD HOUSE AT RILEY CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL BY DROPPING OFF YOUR POP TABS AT THE WLOI/WCOE BROADCAST CENTER.  DROP OFF YOUR TABS AT THE FRONT DESK, MONDAY - FRIDAY, 7:30 A.M. TO 4:30 P.M.  ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE TABS WILL GO TO RONALD MC DONALD HOUSE.

Friends of the Library are asking for your old magazines and books.  The Friends of the Library collect gently used books and magazines to sell and raise money for the library.  If you are cleaning out your closets and basement, drop your extras off at the Michigan City Library's Circulation desk.

La Porte County Habitat for Humanity is looking for donations.  As spring arrives and store traffic grows, so does the need for new, clean, and gently used donations at the La Porte County Habitat for Humanity.  Items typically featured in the ReStore include:  Home goods, Major appliances in working condition, Furniture, Counter tops and cabinets, Plumbing fixtures and components, Electrical fixtures and lighting, Kitchen and bathroom fixtures, Hand and power tools, Fencing and decking material, Doors and windows, Lumber, drywall, masonry and sheeting.  Donations can be brought to the ReStore during normal business hours, Thursdays through Saturdays, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The La Porte County Habitat for Humanity ReStore is located at the corner of 10th and Huron in Michigan City.  La Porte County Habitat for Humanity ReStore offers new and gently used building materials, home goods, furnishings, hardware and more to the public.  Proceeds from the ReStore support Habitat's mission of providing low-cost, affordable housing in our community.  For more information, call 219-814-4985 or like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laportehabitat.

Bring a new culture into your home!. 
By hosting an international student, your family will be rewarded with a life changing experience.  You will learn more about different cultures and how they impact our life in the U.S. by exchanging ideas with your exchange student.  An exposure to different cultures will provide a deeper appreciation for what your family has and the tremendous challenges facing other nations.
Your exchange student will be attending your local high school.  They will be able to add new dimensions to the activities of your schools' international clubs and organizations.  Your student will also participate in community service.

"COOKING WITH TRI-TOWNSHIP" cookbooks are now available at the LaPorte County Historical Museum at 2405 Indiana Ave.(US 35 South). You'll want to pick up one for yourself and some for gifts.  There are nearly 600 recipes representing over 80 classes from LaCrosse and over 30 graduating years from Wanatah.  It has 13 pages of history of schools from Cass, Dewey and Prairie townships as well as approximately 50 historical pictures.  It is truly a treasured keepsake. Cookbooks are available for purchase for $15 each. They can be purchased at LaCrosse and Wanatah Schools, LaCrosse Public Library and the J-Mart BP in Wanatah. It is a hardback book in a three ring binder format. If you aren't local but would still like to buy a cookbook, send an additional $5 each ($20) total to "LaCrosse School Cookbooks, PO Box 360, LaCrosse, IN 46348". Cookbooks have already been mailed across the U.S.

WLOI/WCOE Broadcast Center is a drop off center for pop tabs.  Pop Tabs will be taken to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.
